Excellent condition, no tears or rips in uniform, no cracks on face, light marking on right cheek. The right hand (posed upwards) has fingers missing. No other faults to report, the doll figure is self-standing with strong legs. The date of the doll’s creation is unknown. This is an unusual ningyo doll celebrating an everyday figure in Japanese life. During the Tokugawa period, couriers were used mainly to service feudal officials. In 1871, under the guidance of Maejima Hisoka, a government letter service was inaugurated between Tokyo and Osaka; stamps and letter boxes were started, and by 1872 there were services to many major cities. A uniform postal rate was introduced in 1873 when the government established a state monopoly. By 1880, Japan joined the Universal Postal Union. 1936 wearing a’uniform’ similar to the hapi coat and straw hat. This doll’s uniform is more westernized, has an insignia on the left & right facings of the jacket and on the back. The hat with visor is also more official and westernized.
