Vintage Retro Japanese Doll Geisha Nihon Ningyo Figure Figurine Wooden Case
Japanese Vintage Handmade Porcelain Geisha Doll. Measures 15 39cm tall. Possibly Made in Japan? Wooden case is 42cm x 19cm. Black Laquered base to the doll is 6 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches 17.2 cm x 21cm. The detail in the doll face, hair and attire is very pretty and fine. All silk kimono and her face and body underneath the clothing is porcelain. The original tie that holds her in the case are still in place – its doesnt look like she has ever been removed from the case. To access the doll a wooden bar slides and then you have to remove the glass. I notice a little mark on her nose and a few scuff type marks on the black base. The glass in the case seems rather roughly cut at its edges and is a little sharp -it doesnt seem to like staying in the grooves of the wooden case / box so glass tends to fall downwards on the doll – its possible that this happening has caused the scuff marks on dolls nose and base. F/S Vintage Gogatsu Ningyo (May doll) in a glass case, Boy’s Festival, Japan
Vintage Gogatsu Ningyo (May doll) in a glass case, Boy’s Festival, Japan Introduction of goods Hand Made Vintage Gogatsu Ningyo (May doll) in a glass case. Case Size: W 59.5 X 35.5 X 58.8 cm W23.4 X 13.9 X 23.1 cm Brand : 16 16th generation Syugetsu Crafted by : 16 16th generation Hideshige. Title : Child Treasure The First Battle Admiral. Explaning the Tradition The 5th of May is Boy’s Festival in Japan. The origin can be traced back to the Chinese tradition of exorcism. While the Girl’s Festival is known as Momo no sekku (Peach Festival = Doll’s festival = Hinamatsuri), the Boy’s Festival is called “Tango no sekku”. In 1948, Tango no sekku was renamed Kodomo no hi (Children’s Day). However, people still use both “Kodomo no hi” and Tango no sekku. In the Edo period, when a Shogun had a new born boy, they celebrated on the 5th of May by raising flags. In China, carp symbolize success in life. Therefore, Japanese people drew a picture of a carp on a flag and hung it outside the house to wish the boys a successful life. We also display Japanese armour, helmets or Musha ningyo (Warrior dolls) in the house, wishing for the boys to grow to be strong and wise. It is common for a family that has a son to decorate their house with a flag and gogatsu ningyo to wish for their son’s health and success.
