Vintage Japanese Hina-dolls set Three Court Ladies No10 c1920s
This doll has been in a box for 100 years in a Japanese doll store’s warehouse. Because of this, the doll’s face and costume have been kept in very good condition. This is a well-made, handmade Hina doll. The carefully crafted doll has a kneaded head, and a mold is made from powdered paulownia wood hardened with glue. The clay is then coated with layers of GOFUN (kneaded shell powder) to create the eyes and nose, giving it a lively expression. Japan was in a period of turmoil during World War II, and carefully crafted dolls did not exist. After that, many were mass-produced and crudely made. Unfortunately, many of the faces of modern mass-produced dolls are made of plastic and have little expression.
