In our Fukuoka prefecture, it is said that people associated with temples and shrines have had a custom of cherishing unglazed dolls since the Kamakura Era about 800 years ago. The origin of Hakata dolls was in 1600, when many craftsmen gathered in the area with the move of feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa to Chikuzen(Fukuoka Prefecture) to rule. After the Meiji Era, artists produced modern Hakata dolls and presented them at international exhibitions in Paris(1890), Saint Louis, and other cities all over the world. The dolls earned an excellent reputation, becoming known throughout the world as dolls representative of Japan and being exported overseas. These days, about 100 doll-makers continue to use the traditional doll-making technique while daring to explore new possibilities. All orders are securely packaged and send ECONOMY AIR. Original KN Japan Paper Sticker On the Bottom as well as original store price sticker. The doll has some blemishes. There are 2 chips on her hair head. Small chip on her left elbow. A bit of clear shiny spot on her hair and on her belly. One side of her lei has been taped to keep in place. She’s got black paint under her chin, I’m not sure if that was a production error or not. HAKATA DOLL Japanese Tattoo master & woman Geisha Oiran Ukiyo-e Figure Vintage

It is very unusual motif ornament. (HAKATA DOLL) 0f a Japanese tattoo artist tattooing a geisha. The state is overall although there is dirt of the passing age. I chose not to clean this because the paint is old and has cracks. This needs like a clear coat to protect paint from peeling off. The painting of the Hakata doll is very detailed. No chips or cracks just paint flakes. Very rate piece about 12″ long 9″ high. This is an absolute stunning piece of Hakata art work from the 50s. This Japanese fisherman or cook is beautifully caught in mid action. I love the fish tray that comes with it. Hakata dolls have become one of the popular collector’s items in Japan. At the end of the 19th century, Hakata dolls transformed from simple biscuit-fired toys to works of art. The Hakata doll gained fame when American soldiers took them back to the US as souvenirs during the American occupation of Japan following the Second World War. Japan started exporting Hakata dolls soon afterwards. Hakata Urasaki dolls are a little different. They were made during the Korean War in Japan and are harder to find than the regular Hakata dolls. In amazing vintage condition although these pieces are very fragile and breakable. One small chip on the fish tray (see photo). Size: fisherman: 7 1/2″ T x 5 1/2″ L fish tray: 4 L.
