Vintage Japanese Hakata clay doll (known as Hakata ningyo), traditionally handcrafted and hand-painted in the Hakata region of Japan. It depicts a dramatic character from Kabuki theater, likely a samurai or warrior figure standing in a powerful. Attire: The figure is dressed in a traditional wide-sleeved black robe and heavily stylized white-and-black hakama (traditional split trousers). The front panel features a prominent, intricate pattern of black dots on a white background. The Sword: The character holds a traditional samurai sword (katana) vertically in both hands, with the red-and-brown hilt held close to the chest. Facial Expressions & Makeup: The face is painted in pale white and blue tones with sharp, expressive eyes and dark eyebrows. This mimics the dramatic kumadori makeup worn by real male stage actors. The figurine is made of unglazed biscuit-fired clay (pottery), characteristic of authentic Hakata dolls. It utilizes a flat-backed or low-relief format, often meant to showcase the front profile of the character on a display shelf or nested in a decorative case. This unique item appears to be a vintage Japanese Kabuki warrior or samurai relief wall plaque, hand-crafted out of heavy clay or pottery. Key Features of this Piece. The Costume: He is depicted wearing a traditional theatrical kimono with a heavily patterned black-and-white kamishimo (formal samurai over-vest) and holding a large sword or katana.
