Mostly acquired during a mid-century childhood in Japan, a few in the 1990s. Many dolls made in the 1950s/1960s were meticulously designed and handmade by Japanese artisans, with details like glass eyes and hand-painted faces, hands and feet, as well as luxurious traditional clothing fabric such as silk and brocade. Some of these details were also incorporated into dolls made in the 1990s. Virtually all listed dolls in my collection are in excellent, very good or good condition, especially considering their age. From a smoke-free home. Vintage Mid-Century Japanese Large Geisha Doll w/Brocade Kimono & Shamisen in Glass Case, 17.5 inches. Dimensions: Doll is 16.5 inches height; stand is 8.5 inches length x 6.5 inches width x 17.5 inches height. Composition: Face, hands and feet are made of gofun (ground oyster/clam shells). Face: Hand-painted facial features. Hair Ornaments: Plastic and embroidery thread. Clothing: Kimono is brocade with silk lining; obi (belt) is brocade. Accessories: Shamisen (musical instrument) is made of plastic and silk thread. Glass Case w/Gold-Flecked Backdrop. Dimensions: 13 inches length x 9.75 inches width x 17.5 inches height, including lacquered wood base. Materials: Front door and top are glass panels embedded in lacquered wood; side panels are glass; back panel is heavy cardboard; base is lacquered wood; front door pull is silk thread.
