Vintage kokeshi doll called “Country Girl” by master Yoshio Otani (1936-). Master Yoshio Ohtani was born in 1936. He began making kokeshi dolls in 1968 and has received many awards for his beautiful dolls: the Agriculture Award in 1978 and the Secretary of the Interior Award in 1982, as well as many other awards over the years. A rare doll, in a beautiful kimono with Japanese cranes. The set includes a plate with the signature and seal of the author. In good condition with minor signs of age and use. This is a handmade Japanese Kokeshi Doll, signed by the artist. The doll represents the Daughter of Winter, wearing a large snow coat. It was manufactured in Japan and is part of a collectible series. Item is approximately 11 inches tall (measurements included with photos). The grandfather Doctor Alexis Shelokov was born in China to Russian parents and migrated to the United States in 1930. He was an active participant in Polio treatment. His son, Doctor Alexis Shelokov was a noted pediatric surgeon in Dallas Texas where he specialized in Scoliosis treatment. He passed away in 2015 and is survived by his wife Doctor Georgiana Shelokov-Gibson a noted doctor in Dallas as well.
Original Kokeshi “Michinoku Oyako” by Master Hideo Ishihara (The Prime Minister’s Award winning artist). In ancient times, Japan’s north-eastern Tohoku region was known as “Michinoku” – meaning “The end of the road” and “Oyako” means “Parent and child”. Vintage from the 1970s. 2 figures, Height 21.3/16.8cm. Master Ishihara originally registered as a traditional Narugo Kokeshi Kijishi following the tradition after his grandfather Iwataro Onuma, but he found himself too restricted. He fell ill for more than ten years and he used this time to study painting and when he recovered he began his transition to Sosaku Kokeshi. Winning over 60 awards including The Prime Minister Prize.
