Here is a lovely vintage couple of Japanese dolls from about 1990. These are grandparents or great grandparents shown performing their tasks in the family home compound: cleaning and keeping everything tidy for their extended family. This is a beautiful depiction of the role of old members of Japanese society who are revered by their offspring. The dolls are beautifully detailed, including their faces and kimonos. My favorite parts are how happy they seem to be, as well as the tools they carry – a broom and a rake in great miniature detail. The figures stand at about 11 tall on their own black lacquer bases.
