Mostly acquired during a mid-century childhood in Japan, a few in the 1990s. Many dolls made in the 1950s/1960s were meticulously designed and handmade by Japanese artisans, with details like glass eyes and hand-painted faces, hands and feet, as well as luxurious traditional clothing fabric such as silk and brocade. Some of these details were also incorporated into dolls made in the 1990s. Virtually all listed dolls in my collection are in excellent, very good or good condition, especially considering their age. From a smoke-free home. Vintage Mid-Century Japanese Large Geisha Doll w/Brocade Kimono & Shamisen in Glass Case, 17.5 inches. Dimensions: Doll is 16.5 inches height; stand is 8.5 inches length x 6.5 inches width x 17.5 inches height. Composition: Face, hands and feet are made of gofun (ground oyster/clam shells). Face: Hand-painted facial features. Hair Ornaments: Plastic and embroidery thread. Clothing: Kimono is brocade with silk lining; obi (belt) is brocade. Accessories: Shamisen (musical instrument) is made of plastic and silk thread. Glass Case w/Gold-Flecked Backdrop. Dimensions: 13 inches length x 9.75 inches width x 17.5 inches height, including lacquered wood base. Materials: Front door and top are glass panels embedded in lacquered wood; side panels are glass; back panel is heavy cardboard; base is lacquered wood; front door pull is silk thread. Great lot of 12 dolls. I believe they are Hina dolls – I could be wrong so please feel free to message me with more information so I can update my listing. Yes they are dusty and antique / vintage so there are signs of age and wear. Some of the heads are not permanently attached shown in the photos. All of them are made in Japan and some are missing the pedestal they were originally attached to. Each one is different and some of the accessories that original come with the doll are missing. RARE Master HASHIME TAKAHASHI Vintage Kokeshi, Signed, 1970s Japan Large 15

This large, head-turning kokeshi figurine is an excellent example of Master Takahashi’s work. Takahashi-san’s innovative vision and style, as well as the important contribution he made to the sosaku movement, have made him a revered figure among kokeshi collectors. He is a recipient of multiple high awards in kokeshi competitions; his works are represented in many respectable collections. This large kokeshi will be a visible art accent to complement your home decor. The figurine is in good vintage condition. There is some minor fading and ageing in the varnish, consistent with age – please review the images carefully. Height: 14.5 inches. Weight: 2.3 lbs (1,042 g). Born in 1918 in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture (where traditional kokeshi were born), Takahashi-san was originally a fine artist/painter. He is known for his colorful designs and expressive brush strokes. His artistic background also includes time spent as a craftsman of Yuzen silk dying factory that produced fabrics for kimono. It is no surprise that kimono is the omni-important element of all of his kokeshi. Takahashi-san is a recognized and widely admired kokeshi artist. He is the winner of multiple awards in yearly Kokeshi competitions, including the Prime Minister’s Award, the highest honor bestowed on sosaku kokeshi artists. Takahashi-san has a distinctive, accentuated approach to depicting the kimono. His figurines fashion both painted and carved kimono, obi with exaggerated waists, and supportive under- and over-garments such as scarves and sashes. His dolls strike with bold, minimalistic body shapes, and the decorative motives range from seasonal flowers such as realistically painted Plum flowers (Ume), Cherry blossoms (Sakura), and Japanese Iris (Ayame), to zodiac figures. Last but not least, are the stylized faces with expressive eyes, small dot noses, and wisps of hair. Takahashi-son passed away in 2002, and his son, Akinori is carrying on the family’s tradition, although on a smaller scale.

Kabuki Dancer performing Kuroda Bushi, the true story of a Samurai Warrior named Mori Tahei who was send on an errand by his master Lord Kuroda. Tahei was a heavy drinker and was ordered to stay sober on this mission. He was sent top meet with another warlord, who also liked his Sake. This warlord offered Tahei a drink, which he first refused, until it became a bet. If he could drink a large amount of sake (rumored at 3 liters) from the bowl he is carrying, he could have asked for anything in his host’s possession. Tahei emptied the bowl and asked for the spear he is holding. This spear was one of three such fabled weapons made by master armorers of that day. It is on display in the Fukoaka Museum. A statue of Tahei is located in front of the same museum. The artisan studio that made this figure is The Hakata Doll Association, one of only seven such studios during the modern heyday (1950-55). It is a low-fired ceramic with a bisque finish, and handmade by a single artisan. In 1955, Japan started mass producing Hakata Dolls for export.
